Backing up

MTO Driver’s Handbook: Safe and Responsible Driving, Backing up

Take extra care and move slowly when you back up. Before you begin, check that the way is clear behind you, and be especially careful to look for children and cyclists.

Hold the steering wheel firmly, put the gear selector in reverse and turn sideways in your seat to look over your shoulder in the direction you are moving. Reversing straight back or to the right, turn your body and head to the right and look over your right shoulder; reversing to the left, look over your left shoulder. Always check the opposite shoulder as well, and if you are turning as you reverse, make sure the front end of your vehicle will not hit anything.
