Entering a freeway

MTO Driver’s Handbook: Safe and Responsible Driving, Entering a freeway

A freeway entrance usually has two parts: an entrance ramp and an acceleration lane. As you move along the ramp, look ahead and check your mirrors and blind spots to assess the traffic and decide where you will move into the nearest freeway lane.

In the acceleration lane, increase your speed to the speed of traffic on the freeway before you merge with it, and signal so that you merge smoothly. Freeway drivers should move over when it is safe to do so, leaving room for merging vehicles.
