Chapter 6: The Level Two Road Test
Turns and intersections
The two-step licensing system takes at least 20 months and includes two road tests; the examiner gives directions. While slowing for a turn, keep at least a two to three-second distance behind the vehicle in front. If you must stop behind another vehicle, leave enough space to pull out and pass without backing up. Keep your front wheels straight while waiting to turn left. End the turn in the lane corresponding to the lane you turned from; do not change lanes or cross lane markings inside an intersection. If you turn right where the right lane is blocked by parked vehicles or cannot be used, move directly to the next available lane.
Freeway and lane changes
Check your mirrors every five to 10 seconds. If a vehicle follows too closely, give yourself more room in front or change lanes. Do not slow down before you are completely in the exit lane. Before changing lanes, check the new lane's traffic and your blind spot after signalling.
Roadside stop, curve, parking
For a roadside stop, a 150-metre gap in both directions is enough. Stop parallel to the curb, not more than about 30 centimetres away, and turn on your hazard lights. Slow to the safe speed by the time you are 30 metres into a curve, and brake before it, not in it. When preparing to back into a parallel parking space, leave at least 60 centimetres between your vehicle and the parked vehicle. Do not hit the curb or touch another vehicle.
City, residential and turning around
In a business section, drive in the safest through lane, usually the curb lane, and check your mirrors more often in heavy traffic. When stopping behind a vehicle, leave enough space to see its rear wheels or pull around. Without lane markings on a residential road, keep to the centre of the travelled part, away from parked vehicles or pedestrians; where a curve or a hill stops you seeing far ahead, move right so an oncoming vehicle over the centre line does not hit you. For a three-point turn, use the whole road and reverse only once.
Concept cards in this chapter
Level Two road test: roadside stop and curve
- ON-1206What gap in both directions does the handbook give as enough space for a roadside stop?
- ON-1207By when should you be at the safe speed for a curve?
- ON-1208Where should you look while driving through a curve?
- ON-917You plan a roadside stop. Vehicles are waiting to enter the road from side roads or driveways between you and your stopping point. When should you signal?
- ON-918Where do you stop for a roadside stop, and what do you switch on afterwards?
Turns at the Level Two road test
- ON-1200You plan to turn at the next intersection, and a driveway entrance with a waiting vehicle comes before it. When should you turn on your signal?
- ON-1201You stop behind another vehicle at an intersection. How much space should you leave?
- ON-1202You turn left onto a road with several lanes in your direction. Which lane should you finish the turn in?
